Cuba Predicts Economic Turmoil if US Military Escalates Drone Dispute.

In a stark warning, Cuba’s president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has cautioned that any military intervention by the United States against Cuba could result in a “bloodbath” with unpredictable repercussions for the peace and stability of the region. He emphasized that Cuba poses no threat in a message posted on X, highlighting the potential consequences of escalating tensions.

This statement comes in the wake of a report suggesting that Cuba has amassed over 300 military drones with discussions purportedly taking place about using them against U.S. targets, including the naval base at Guantánamo Bay, military vessels, and Key West, Florida. The foreign minister, Bruno Rodriguez, defended Cuba’s right to self-defense, stating that, like any other nation, Cuba is entitled to protect itself from external threats under the UN charter and international law. He further claimed that those attempting to justify attacks on Cuba are doing so under false pretenses.

Relations between Cuba and the U.S. have been historically strained, with Cuba being a long-time adversary of Washington. Recent developments have only intensified these tensions. The situation has been exacerbated by the U.S.’s decision to cut off energy supplies to Cuba following the arrest of the president of Venezuela, a close ally of Cuba, in January. This has led to severe shortages, with fuel running out and electricity being available for only short periods each day.

The diplomatic friction has escalated further with reports suggesting that U.S. prosecutors are considering indicting former Cuban leader Raúl Castro over the 1996 downing of two planes operated by the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue. At 94 years old, Castro’s indictment would signify a significant increase in the pressure being applied on Cuba by the Trump administration, which has often criticized the Cuban government, labeling it as corrupt and incompetent, while advocating for political change on the island.
