Under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is actively working to mend its security collaboration with the United States, which had been fraught with tension during the tenure of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. A central figure in this revitalized alliance is Security Cabinet coordinator Omar García Harfuch, who has been engaging frequently with top US officials. These meetings have primarily focused on enhancing intelligence sharing and tackling organized crime. Mexican authorities highlight that the increased speed of information exchange has notably improved their ability to swiftly respond to criminal activities.
During Sheinbaum’s administration, Mexico has made significant strides in its anti-crime efforts, reporting substantial numbers of arrests and seizing large quantities of weapons and drugs. Additionally, thousands of clandestine drug labs have been dismantled. The country has also quickened the pace of extraditing high-profile criminal suspects to the United States, with officials noting a marked decrease in fentanyl trafficking as a result of these efforts.
This renewed cooperation represents a departure from the policies of the López Obrador era, which saw the closure of a US intelligence unit in Mexico and the implementation of stricter controls on foreign security agents operating within the country. The bilateral relationship further soured in 2020 after the arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos and disagreements over organized crime investigations.
Relations reached a critical point in 2024 when reports emerged suggesting that drug-trafficking funds were linked to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Although these claims did not lead to formal charges, they exacerbated the distrust between Mexican authorities and their US counterparts.
Despite the progress in cooperation, President Sheinbaum consistently emphasizes the importance of respecting Mexico’s sovereignty and insists on mutual respect in dealings with the United States. Her administration has expressed concern over perceived attempts by US officials to influence or cause divisions within Mexico’s security structure. As both nations pursue more effective collaboration against organized crime, Mexico maintains that intelligence cooperation must align with its sovereignty and national interests.
