At the United Nations General Assembly, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco emphasized Mexico’s dedication to preserving national sovereignty while fostering international cooperation. In his address, Velasco underscored Mexico’s strategy of engaging with global partners without compromising its independence, reflecting a balance between collaboration and self-determination.

Standing in for President Claudia Sheinbaum, Velasco highlighted Mexico’s social policies, efforts to reduce poverty, and the reported decline in homicide rates. He linked these domestic achievements to Mexico’s broader international stance that sustainable peace is rooted in social development and respect for territorial integrity.

Velasco also reiterated Mexico’s positions on key international issues. He voiced support for a two-state solution in the Middle East, recognizing Palestine’s right to secure and recognized borders. Additionally, he condemned the U.S. embargo on Cuba and affirmed Mexico’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to the island nation.

Beyond his speech, Velasco engaged in diplomatic discussions with officials from countries including Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru. In a meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, the two discussed strengthening bilateral relations and preparing for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid. With Peru, Velasco talked about reopening embassies, signaling a restoration of diplomatic relations based on dialogue and mutual respect.

The sideline meetings focused on enhancing economic cooperation, promoting strategic investments, and discussing reforms within the United Nations. These engagements highlight Mexico’s proactive role in reinforcing multilateral institutions and trade relations on the global stage.
