In a significant escalation of the conflict, Ukraine has reportedly launched one of its most extensive drone attacks on Russian territory since the war began. Russian officials have stated that the assault resulted in at least six fatalities and ignited a large fire at a distribution warehouse near Moscow. The Russian Defence Ministry announced that 1,478 Ukrainian drones were intercepted over a 24-hour span, marking the highest number documented in a single day, although these figures remain unverified by independent sources.
Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, reported that approximately 600 drones targeted the Moscow area, with 201 being destroyed. The attack resulted in one death in the region. A significant blaze erupted at a Wildberries distribution center near Podolsk, about 25 miles from central Moscow. The facility, spanning roughly 250,000 square meters, suffered extensive damage and was rendered inoperative according to Ukrainian military sources. Ukrainian authorities have been deploying long-range drones to hit Russian military and economic sites situated well beyond the frontline. They claim Wildberries facilities are targeted for their alleged use in military logistics.
The drone strikes underscore Ukraine’s expanding long-range offensive capabilities, while Russia continues its strategy of utilizing drones and missiles to bombard Ukrainian urban centers and critical infrastructure. Russian attacks have also claimed the lives of at least seven individuals in Ukraine, including casualties in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. A missile strike in Kyiv left six people wounded and triggered fires at a major book market, where several businesses reportedly lost all their inventory.
In a related incident, a Spanish fighter jet, operating under NATO, downed a suspected Russian drone that had violated Romanian airspace, according to NATO representatives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure. He reported that in the preceding week, Russia launched over 1,550 attack drones, close to 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukrainian targets.
This increase in hostilities comes as both nations are enhancing their use of long-range weaponry, raising the potential for further casualties and destruction far from the primary battlefronts.
