The complex issue of drug trafficking and corruption across the U.S.-Mexico border has once again come to the forefront as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum defends her country’s efforts against U.S. criticism. Sheinbaum responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s calls for stronger action against drug-related crime in Mexico by highlighting the need for both nations to address their roles in the ongoing crisis.

During a morning press conference, President Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s awareness of its internal challenges and its commitment to combating drug trafficking and organized crime. She argued that Mexico should not be judged externally while calling for increased scrutiny of the United States’ contribution to the problem. Specifically, Sheinbaum pointed out the issues of drug consumption, money laundering, and the illegal flow of arms from the U.S. into Mexico.

Sheinbaum addressed the need for a collaborative approach, questioning the measures implemented by the U.S. to curb the activities of drug traffickers operating across the border and to prevent the illegal flow of firearms. She also highlighted the importance of tackling opioid addiction and consumption domestically within the United States. According to Sheinbaum, the influx of illegal firearms from the U.S. bolsters the power of criminal organizations in Mexico, complicating efforts to address the root issues of drug trafficking.

Trump’s administration has previously praised Mexico for arrests and prosecutions but continues to demand more aggressive actions against corruption and officials linked to drug cartels. In response, Sheinbaum defended her government’s record, citing initiatives like Operation Swarm, which targets criminal and corruption networks, and asserting that Mexican authorities prosecute officials with suspected ties to crime when evidence is available.

Concluding her statements, President Sheinbaum called for transparency regarding U.S. efforts to tackle fentanyl trafficking and its consumption crisis. She stressed that both nations must examine their responsibilities in addressing the cross-border drug issue, advocating for a shared responsibility rather than unilateral blame.
